Effective Tips for Online Poker

Effective Tips for Online Poker
With all the tips on the Internet on how to become good online poker players, one would think that the number of weak players would be on the decline. However, that is not the case, and you'll be surprised by the number of players who play badly once they get themselves in the thick of things. To become an effective and successful player, one has to start from the beginning, and that is the hand selection. This is one of the most important aspects for any poker player, and should be well taken care off.
With the majority of post game interviews conducted, poker players often confessed to having played hands they shouldn't have, because they had folded a hand or two that would have made two pair or a straight on the flop. By making careful decisions at the time, they would have avoided trashy hands. For a player in this situation, the facts at hand are all that matter, and should help you make a good decision. Amateur players often struggle with good decision making, and constant practice should help with that.
Once you are dealt the cards and are now fully involved with a particular hand, it is important not to show weakness. You need to be the boss around the table, even if you will hit the flop. If you've shown your grit pre-flop, you must keep at it the whole way through. You may get nervous keeping up the act, but the rest of the table is watching, and if they see strength and resilience, they may just fold and let you take down the pot. While they may call you out a few times with monster hits, they will take you as a force to be reckoned with.
With online poker, the speed and pace of the game is much faster than the real life game. This tests players' strength and resolve, as well as their decision making skills. You probably will take a few hits before getting accustomed to the aggressive nature of online poker, but don't let this keep you down. The absence of visual tells is also something you may have to get used to. Use the skills gained by practice, and observe the other players keenly so you can get an edge on them. If you want to take down some notes as the game progresses, do so. That information will be valuable should you encounter a similar game situation.
For new players, getting to learn the game takes quite a while. And you don't want to be losing money while you are still new to the game. Play free online poker as you get to learn the ropes. Many websites offer this free platform, and should be your training ground as you get better and better. Practice in online poker cannot be understated; it is necessary for success.
With that said, online poker is a fun game to explore with friends and family. You can even make it a weekly activity. Sign up today on any of the numerous online poker sites and win some money.

Straight
It is one of the oldest form of poker. A complete hand is dealt to each player, and the players bet in a specific round, where raising and more increase in the amount of bet is allowed. This game of poker is used for final showdown, but gradually more complications were introduced into it.
Stud Poker
After the straight poker a new form was introduced called stud poker. The cards are dealt in a prearranged combination of either face-down and face-up rounds, or streets, with a round of betting following each. Earlier the game had three cards but it changed to five. A new concept of seven-card stud has gained a lot of popularity. It deals two extra cards to each player( containing three face-down, four face-up).

Are Men Better Free Poker Game Players Than Women?

Are Men Better Free Poker Game Players Than Women?
Have you ever noticed how male and female poker players tend to have different playing styles even in free poker games?
This may not be something that a lot of players are able to pick up on. However, I have noticed it a great deal from playing at different tables both free poker games and high stakes, online and casino. My observation is that female poker players tend to be a little more careful than male players. Women tend to play hands less frequently, and just take down small pots in order to keep above water. In comparison men are often more aggressive, take more risks and chase larger pots.
Although it may be a biased opinion, I feel strongly towards my claim and have no doubts about what I've learned, as I say, these are observations taken from many free poker tournaments online and paid Internet and casino tables.
Another observation is that it can be easier to push a woman off of a pot than a male player. Women tend to avoid the larger pots as I've mentioned already. That's why it is often easier to buy a pot off of a female player than against a male.
Now before anyone gets angry I'm not taking anything away from the female game with that point, I just feel that women tend to play more of a conservative game which can also be an advantage to them.
This is because men tend to jump the gun a little bit. They'll try to force hands that aren't meant to be. Not to say that only they do it, but once again, it's just something I've noticed from playing myself. It seems to be especially prevalent in free poker games and tournaments where despite the lack of risk the women play a more sensible game with a more strategic objective as opposed to an all-in and hope mentality.
Of course everyone has their flaws and strong points and it's not just down to gender! You'll find super cautious male players and very aggressive women.
As intelligent "cut above the average" players of either sex we must always strive to learn from our mistakes, practice at free poker games to improve and accept that we may have certain gender related traits that we should aim to harness to our advantage.

Ups and Downs of Online Poker Bonuses

Ups and Downs of Online Poker Bonuses
Signing up to an online poker game also means a sign up bonus is waiting for you. Sign up bonuses are very popular with online poker games, no matter how successful they are. The sign up match bonus can be found on most poker sites because most people are likely to sign up to it. The key to a giving a sign up match bonus is giving away money from a percentage of your first deposit. The percentage can be 100% or more in some cases. This is just a start of the ups and downs of online poker bonuses. This article will show a few more reasons why there are ups and downs.
Ups: Make Money With Bonuses
If you are given money for an online poker bonus, that is a plus in itself. It does not require anything you would do different. All you do is sign up, get your bonus, and start playing. If you already have confidence that you will win at the poker games, getting a bonus only gives you more money. If you are new to poker, a bonus can give you financial boosts to play. Being an intermediate poker player, a bonus can only help you.
Ups: Try Other Sites Without Losing Money
If you have free money to play around with, who would not want try out other poker sites? It only means you can play until your money is spent or you reach payout. Investing your own money is not necessary, so use your bonus money at any site you can get signed up to. If you reach payout and decide the site is not your favorite, use your payout at another site you like.
Ups: No Requirements
Signing up to an online poker game does not connect you to any agreements. Collect your sign up bonus and use it as you wish. Just play until you reach the minimum balance to receive your payout and play more on the site, or move to another site. There is not a time frame for you which you must sign up to play or a dollar amount that you must start out with if this is your first sign up. Use the bonus to your advantage and play the best winning hands you can. Earn with the bonus money so you can invest it back into the game to make more money.
Downs: Reaching Bonus Pay
Getting a bonus at sign up does not exactly mean the money will be in your account for withdrawal at the start of sign up. Poker sites have to encourage you to play, so they use the bonuses as a way to get your gaming. Your bonus amount will determine the number of hands needed to play before reaching bonus pay. If you dislike the online poker site but have signed up for the bonus, reaching payout is required to get it. There is no way around this. If you want to withdraw bonus money without a penalty, look into the sites policies on stick bonuses.
Downs: Restricted Time
Since online poker sites want to encourage you to play, they have a set amount of time to reach your sign up bonus. Your bankroll must be replenished before their set deadline to receive your bonus. Playing certain games can take a long time to play, such as the no limit Texas Hold'em game, so do not waste your opportunity to get your bonus by not playing.
A sign up bonus to play online poker is a great way to start your poker practice, but use it to your advantage if you are a skilled poker player. Just know the ups and downs of using the sign up bonus and ensure the best use for your bonus.

Learning Free Poker Website Lingo

Learning Free Poker Website Lingo
I remember when I first started playing free poker and there were so many terms that I didn't understand, it was like a whole different language.
Hopefully this guide will help you learn some of the more modern terms, and also some of the more complex ones used when playing  all know some of the terms like, flop, turn, river, check, raise and so forth but there are even some terms for those that are foreign to some players. Such as...
4th street - also commonly called the Turn
5th street - the river
But that is not the limit of the terms you can keep in mind while you're contemplating your next moves. Keep these in mind when you are watching the bets come around to you.
Plays tight - term meaning that the player doesn't play a lot of hands
Plays loose - the opposite to playing tight, and the player tends to play lots of hands
Plays "ATC"- they play anything "ATC"= any two cards".
On tilt- means that a player is being erratic with their bets usually from losing a tough hand earlier.
Now that you have an idea on pre-flop situations now let take a look at board activity terms.
Over pair - A pair in your hand that beats what is on the board.
Top pair - means that you have paired the highest card on the board with one in your hand. Next down is middle pair and bottom pair respectively.
If you manage to survive the flop but have 4th and 5th St. left to endure. Then you have three more terms to keep in mind as you go.
Outs - the amount of cards that can give you a winning hand.
Drawing dead- this basically means that you have no chance of winning a hand. Some players if they are drawing dead may bluff or go on tilt at the last second to try and steal the pot.
Having the "nuts"- Having the nuts means you have the best possible hand available from the cards on the board and in your hand.
Some good tips when playing
Granted, in all free poker play and pay poker, everyone can bet, check, and raise but even those three options can lead to some interesting possibilities. Even terms like check and raise can lead to some pretty interesting scenarios and put players in a frenzy. One example is to check-raise. That term means to check when the bet comes to you but then raise if a bet comes up. This tactic can hide the strength of your hand and can lure a player into losing a lot chips if he is not careful on how he plays it.
Value bet - Is a bet that is not a large bet but is considered small enough to call. Some players may call a value bet in hopes of gauging a player's game play or to see their hand.
Semi-bluff bet - Is similar to a bluff bet but is enough of a bet to make a player think very carefully about what their next move is.
Pot odds - This term I would say is the most useful term to keep in mind. Pot odds is the ratio of your chips in the pot versus the whole pot. For example if you have $1500 in a $6000 pot your pot odds would be 4:1. Keep this in mind if you are in a tight hand and not sure if you should risk more or not.
Pot committed - Term meaning that a player has a majority of their chips in the pot. This is a very useful term as it can decide to back off on a hand or force them all in if you have the nuts.
Whether you are playing free poker games or pay poker, if you hear any of these terms in your game, then hopefully they will give you an edge to know what is happening and you can use this to your advantage to win more chips.

Free Poker Games Guide To Semi Bluffing

Free Poker Games Guide To Semi Bluffing
In this free poker online article we're going to look at the art of semi-bluffing.
What's a semi bluff then? Well, if you're bluffing with nothing, that's what you call a pure bluff or a stone-cold bluff. But if you bluff where you have a bit of something and that's what we call the semi-bluff.
For example, when you have a hand like Ad-Kd at a board of 6h-7h-8s-10h and you bet large or raise your opponent's bet large, here you are executing a pure bluff.
This is because your hand did not improve in the Flop and weakened on the Turn. But if you put your opponent on a weaker hand like A-Q or even a draw like A-J, then you can push him out of the pot by betting substantially. That is the only way you can win. If he calls your bluff, then you're A-K can't stand much pressure.
But suppose you are holding 7-6 and the Flop comes 5-4-J. Your opponent checks. You figure out that your opponent may have a raggedy Jack in there, so you check. You check with the intention of folding if you don't improve your hand and if he plays aggressively; but the main reason of your checking is to catch a Three or an Eight and kill your opponent's A-J, K-J or maybe 9-9 later.
However, suppose your opponent checks and you bet? Betting in this situation serves two purposes. One is to increase the pot if you somehow improve to your Straight. Two is to kick your opponent out. If he has nothing well, naturally, he shall move out. (With 9-9 he may move out.)
But what if he has the Jack? If he had a weak Jack (say, J-8) he may put you on a bigger Jack, say, A-J, or K-J and he may move out. Because you bet (or raise) it indicates that your pocket cards somehow fit the community cards.
Now, he may call, and you proceed to the Turn and the River. You figure out now he may have A-J or K-J. Or he may continue with 9-9.
If your hand doesn't improve yet on the later rounds then you can pure-bluff your opponent all the way or stop.
But what if you hit your Straight? Then there is a possibility that he was putting you on a weaker Jack after the Flop (like J-8) and he may even raise with A-J or K-J. He has no idea that the Straight was completed!
He has no idea that the Three or the Eight helped you vastly. You can now crush your opponent. This was the semi part.
Here you can now win in two ways: Through the "bluff" part - Your opponent will fold. You still have the pot. Or through the "semi" - both of you will show down your hands, and you win a large pot.
Also, you can check and check until you complete the Straight, but you show your opponent your hand. The next time he will play with you, he might be scared if a similar situation arises.
If you semi-bluff, however, you still show your opponent if he decides to continue, but additionally, you can make your opponent fold so he cannot guess what you have.
Overall lesson? You can be more unpredictable with semi-bluffing so get practising on the free poker games sites first where you don't have the fear of losing money before you venture onto money making (and losing) cash sites.

Poker Terms - A Basic Poker Glossary

Poker Terms - A Basic Poker Glossary
I was looking through all of the articles on  the other day and I realized that no-one had actually covered a reasonably complete list of poker terms. I've been harping on why players new to poker should know about the lingo used in poker before jumping into the fray for a while, yet I never really focused on poker terms. My bad. So here is the first installment of the most common poker terms. Some of them are specific to online poker (OP) while others apply to poker in general.
Advance Action (OP)
This option is available in many online poker rooms. When you know what your next move is going to be and it is not your turn yet, you can already indicate what you are going to do with this option.
All In
This simply means you are betting all the chips you have. Players usually go all in when they are running out of chips yet they do not want to fold. As a result, a player who goes all in has the chance to win all the bets up to the last amount he put in.
Ante
This is the small amount of chips that each player at the table has to put in before he can participate in the game. In some games, instead of an ante, a blind is used.
Avatar (OP)
This is your online representation of yourself. Most online poker rooms have a variety of characters which you can choose from to represent yourself.
Bad Beat
You are a bad beat when you seem to have everything going for you at the table and then suddenly the statistical underdog comes up and beats you.
Bet The Pot
When you play pot limit games, you can bet an amount equal to the pot. Say, if the pot is at $100, then you bet $100 as well.
Blind
This is a mandatory bet used in place of the ante. In a game, there is a big blind and a small blind. The blinds are part of the player's bet and rotates around the table.
Big Blind
Generally, the big blind is the same amount as the lower stake in a poker game. The big blind is to the left of the small blind who is to the left of the dealer.
Board
For Texas Hold 'em Poker, the cards on the table - the community cards - are also known as the board.
Burn
Normally used for off line poker games, the top card in the deck is discarded - or burned - before the next card is shown face up. This minimizes the chances of cheating. In online poker, this is not done.
Button
In a real life poker game, this is a marker - usually round - that is used to indicate who the dealer is. It is also called the dealer button but is normally shortened to just "button." In an online game, the button serves the same purpose but is of course, a virtual marker. The button is only used in poker games wherein the position relative to the dealer is of any importance.
Buy In
A buy in is basically how much a person has to pay in order to play poker at a table. Most any poker game - even home games - has a minimum buy in. In most cases, the buy in for a poker game would be about 10 times as much as the big blind or the higher stake. However, there are always exceptions.
Call
This is a term used during betting. For example, if the last person bets $50, the next person up for betting will CALL if he matches the $50 bet.
Check
Another term used during betting, checking is allowed when there are no pending bets on the table. A person may check if he does not want to put in any money.
Collusion
This is a form of cheating which can be used for both online and offline games. What happens is that two or more players at the table exchange vital information in order to gain an advantage over the other players. Of course, this is more easily done online than offline.
Community Cards
Different poker games have community cards laid out on the table. These cards are shown face up and are shared by all the players at the table. They can be used in combination with the hand held by each player. The most popular community card poker games are Texas Hold 'Em and Omaha Poker.
Dead Hand
Quite obviously, a dead hand is one which is not included in the game anymore.
Flop
Used specifically for Texas Hold 'Em Poker, the flop is composed of the first three cards that are dealt face up (and thus become the community cards).
Flush
Five suited cards in one hand.
Fold
A player folds and withdraws himself from the game when he deems his cards unplayable. Folding is a necessary part of poker even if beginners find it difficult to do so at certain times.
Raise
Another term used during rounds of betting. More than just calling the bet of the person before him, a poker player can actually increase the amount by raising the bet. If he does so, the other player will be forced to match the raise or fold instead.
These are only some of the terms that you would most likely encounter when playing poker. Reading and memorizing them would do a certain amount of good but there is nothing like practicing and actually using these terms for you to be able to remember them all.

Poker Games - Enjoy it Online

Poker Games - Enjoy it Online
The popularity of poker games has taken a huge upsurge with the introduction of online gaming and the fact that the internet is available to so many people in today's times. Many see their friends enjoying the game and also want to be part of the enjoyment. Though it is a good idea to play poker games online, it is essential to select the right website.
You can take the help of the internet to find out about the right sites to play poker games. There are reviews written by many users who have played at these sites and would be willing to give the right picture. You can also check out the support service provided by these sites and only if they are okay, you need to become a member of the site.
Certain sites offer incentives to new members in the form of bonuses or very little deposits. You can also try out some of these sites and get firsthand experience before continuing with them for a longer period of time. Other sites allow you to even download software so that you can get accustomed to the site.
Once you start playing, make sure that you stick to the rules of the game. You can start becoming good at it by playing some of the free poker games that are available before starting to play games that involve real cash. The best way is to not become too overconfident when you make small wins and try to learn from every hand you play, whether you win or lose. At the initial stages, it is better if you do not try to pit yourself against better players as you are bound to lose. You have to make improvements slowly and have patience in taking pride over small victories before you play the big ones.
One key to this is to keep constant vigil over your bankroll and never exceed your capacity. You must know your capacity and stick to tables with small stakes so that you have better chances of winning. For this, you need to be brutally honest about your own capability and have a realistic assessment of how far you can go.
To get the required confidence you first need to choose tables where you can beat your opponents and even if they are really weak and are easy to beat, you must have the wins under your belt so that it gives optimism. At the same time, treat these wins as opportunities to learn as when you play against better players, the errors you make will not be spared and would be capitalised upon by them quite easily.
You can enjoy poker games only when you have the right mindset of willing to observe, willing to be patient and having the capacity to be honest to yourself.

Free Online Poker Guide to How to Play a Big Hand Preflop

Free Online Poker Guide to How to Play a Big Hand Preflop
What do you do with a big hand preflop when you have a big stack, like K-K? And how might the other players react? Regardless of if you simply play free poker online for pennies or are at the final table in WSOP this is a core situation that you must know how to exploit to the full.
For our example we will look at an example from a World Series of Poker game:
BLINDS 40,000/80,000

A has As-10c moves all-in (Pot 1.296m)

B has K-K reraises to 5m (Pot 6.296m)

B has two options here. He can just call and then wait for someone to move all-in after him, but that would make him do some thinking...
Could it be A-A? Or Q-Q? If it was Q-Q there is a slight chance he might fold K-K, and regret it. But a big reraise can drive Q-Q or lower out, like what happened to another player:
C has Jd-Jc
(C's comments on B's hand were: "Why did you make it so much?... You like your hand that much?")
If C calls, it's for all of his chips.
C may think that B has A-K, but there are two all-ins in front of him, and one of them might be A-X (and with A-X he is still not safe) or a pair, but a suspiciously heavy raise to about 60 times the big blind is almost always a signal for A-A or K-K. So C could wait for a better opportunity than now.
C folds (Pot 2.39m)
C's fold was brilliant, after the reraise, but it will still be brilliant even if B did not reraise. B might bet again on the Flop and C may not continue and just let go of the chips.
B's reraise will work if he has A-A or K-K, but I doubt it if he will do the same with A-K or Q-Q, but it may have the same effect of making C fold. As for A, let us wish for his good health. B won the hand later.
